Subject: NACWA SUPPORTS DRUG ENFORCEMENT ADMINISTRATION’S NATIONAL PRESCRIPTION DRUG TAKE-BACK INITIATIVE
Reference: AA 10-26

Action Please By:
September 25, 2010

NACWA is supporting the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) new nationwide prescription drug National Take-Back Day.  DEA recently announced via press release icon-pdf that along with other government, community, public health and law enforcement partners, it would initiate a nationwide prescription drug “Take-Back Day” to remove potentially dangerous controlled substances from the Nation’s medicine cabinets.  While the initiative is being held to bring national attention to the rising incidence of prescription drug abuse and theft, it will also provide communities an opportunity to educate their residents on the importance of keeping prescription medications from entering the Nation’s waterways.

Collection activities of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs will take place on Saturday, September 25, 2010 from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm local time at sites established throughout the country.  To find a collection site near you, go to DEA’s website and check back often because additional collection sites will be posted daily. The one-day effort is free and anonymous for those turning in prescription drugs.
