NEWS-SUN STAFF REPORT

GURNEE -- The North Shore Sanitary District has been honored by the National Association of Clean Water Agencies with its Peak Performance Award.

All three NSSD treatment plants were recognized by the group at its summer conference for 100 percent compliance in 2008 with their National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permits.

"The North Shore Sanitary District's achievement is an outstanding example of the efforts of wastewater agencies to protect our environment," Ken Kirk, NACWA's executive director, said.

The NSSD's Waukegan and Clavey Road facilities received the Platinum Peak Performance Award, which recognizes five or more consecutive years of NPDES compliance, and the Gurnee plant received the Gold award for meeting permit requirements for at least one calendar year.

"This Peak Performance Award is a reflection on the efforts of all the employees of the North Shore Sanitary District, and we are all grateful for NACWA's recognition of our work," said Trustee Dan Pierce of Highland Park, who accepted the award along with NSSD General Manager Brian Dorn.
