Eligibility

It is the objective of NACWA’s Board of Directors that the Association’s leadership reflects diversity with regard to sex, race and national origin.  Any individual, designated as the Member Agency's representative to the Association, is eligible for election to the Board of Directors.

Factors for Consideration
Included among the factors to be considered when placing your name, or that of another Member Agency representative, into nomination are the history of the Member Agency’s active participation in NACWA activities; the ability, both in terms of schedule and financial capability, of the nominee to travel (NACWA’s Board meets four times a year); the role of the member agency’s federal elected officials in the national legislative process; and, whether the nominee is representative of geographical diversity within the Region.

Please also note the following specific duties and responsibilities of the Board as you consider potential nominees:

  • Establish annual Association goals;
    Oversee the management of Association’s finances, including approving the annual budget and establishing an appropriate dues structure for the membership;
  • Allocate Association resources;
  • Approve programs and activities of the Association’s committees and provide oversight of such committees;
  • Adopt Association positions and policies;
  • Oversee the management of the Association’s activities through policy guidance and directives to the
  • Executive Director and oversight of staff activities;
  • Establish relationships with other organizations;
  • Authorize participation in litigation; and
  • Ensure orderly long-range planning for the Association.

Nomination Process

In order to be considered by the Nominating Committee, nominees for re-election or election to vacant seats must personally express a willingness to serve and have a minimum of two NACWA members from their region support their nomination in writing (e-mail is acceptable).  Thus, an individual desiring to be on the Board may place their name into nomination, but must also solicit the support of two other member agencies from their region.  If, as a result of nominations, there are two or more members from a region meeting the qualifications, the Nominating Committee will oversee a vote of regional NACWA members.  The Committee will report nominations to the entire membership for election at the Annual Business Meeting in Anchorage, Alaska in July.

The Role of the Nominating (Directors) Committee
The role of the Nominating (Directors) Committee is to actively solicit nominations for new regional, at-large, or vacant Board seats; certify the eligibility of the nominated candidates; and subsequently nominate member agency representatives for appointment or election to the Board.

Please forward a copy of your nominations to both Patricia Cleveland, Chair of the Nominating (Directors) Committee, and Ken Kirk, NACWA’s Executive Director, no later than Friday, June 13, 2008.
