Factors for Consideration/Qualifications

The factors and qualifications to be considered when placing your name, or that of another Member Agency representative, into nomination include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • The nominee’s ability to commit to active participation on the Board of Directors and Board committees, and capability of fulfilling the duties of a member of the Board of Directors (NACWA’s Board meets in person four times a year. Please see the duties and responsibilities of Board Members below);

  • Whether the nominee represents geographical diversity within the region;
  • Whether the nominee reflects the diversity of the community served; and
  • The nominee’s ability and willingness to effectively represent the Association to Member Agencies in their region, individuals, the public, and other organizations.

As you consider potential nominees, please note that Board Members are expected to: develop policies and procedures for the operation of NACWA; monitor the Association’s financial health, programs, and overall performance; and, provide the Executive Director with the resources necessary to achieve NACWA’s purpose.
Specifically, full Board responsibilities include:

  • Establishment of policy;
  • Securing adequate funding for the Association;
  • Monitoring finances;
  • Creating and updating a long-range strategic plan for the Association;
  • Electing and supporting the Association’s officers; and,
  • Adopting key operating policies & procedures.

Individual Board Member expectations include:

  • Attendance at all board meetings and activities;
  • Observation of fiduciary duties to the Association;
  • Becoming knowledgeable about the Association;
  • Coming to Board Meetings well-prepared and well-informed about issues on the agenda;
  • Contributing to the dialogue during Board Meetings, representing the NACWA members in your region;
  • Considering other points of view, making constructive suggestions and helping the Board make decisions that benefit the Association;
  • Representing the Association to individuals, the public, and other organizations; and,

Nomination Process

In order to be considered by NACWA’s Nominating Committee (Directors), nominees for Board seats must personally confirm their willingness to serve and receive the support of two or more designated Member Agency representatives from their region in writing (e-mail is acceptable).  In the event that there is more than one nominee from a given region, the Nominating Committee, in consultation with regional leadership, shall review nominations based on the noted qualifications and select the single best candidate to be put before the membership for election.  The Nominating Committee will report nominations to the entire membership for election at the Association’s Annual Business Meeting in Portland, Oregon in July.
