Contact Your Members of Congress by Wednesday to Help Preserve the Tax-Exempt Status of Municipal Bonds

The Obama Administration’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2014 Budget request includes a proposal to implement a 28 percent benefit cap on tax-exempt municipal bond interest for high income taxpayers. According to a recent U.S. Conference of Mayors report pdf button, if this provision had been enacted over the last decade, it would have cost states and municipalities $173 billion (nearly $19 billion in 2012 alone) in interest expense for infrastructure projects and prevented many others from going forward.

We need your help! Urge Your House Representatives to Sign the Hultgren/Ruppersberger Letter!

On June 26, the "Dear Colleague" letterpdf button in support of the tax exemption for municipal bond interest currently being circulated by Reps. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD) and Randy Hultgren (R-IL) will be closed for signatures. As of Tuesday (June 24), there are only 62 Representatives who have signed on. They are listed below.

The bipartisan letter, which will be sent to House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), urges them to support municipal bonds and to oppose proposals that would cap or eliminate the tax exemption for municipal bond interest. NACWA has been working closely with Congressional staff to move this effort forward.
