As Congress gears up to debate reauthorization of the Farm Bill, a coalition of water, wastewater, conservation and state organizations is urging Congress to support policies that strengthen the links between agriculture and water quality with the primary focus being on meaningful reductions in nutrient run-off from farmlands. NACWA is convening the coalition, which includes the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies, American Water Works Association, the Association of State and Interstate Water Pollution Control Agencies, Water Environment Federation, Sierra Club, Northeast Midwest Institute, Environmental Defense Fund, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and Audubon, among others.  NACWA has also convened a working group of its members under the leadership of Kevin Shafer, Executive Director of Milwaukee, to help inform and support the work of NACWA and the coalition to advocate on behalf increased attention to water quality concerns in the Farm Bill.  As a first step in this advocacy effort, this letter icon-pdf is being circulated among coalition partners to send to Capitol Hill.

NACWA urges you to add your utility’s name to the letter by January 26, 2011, to demonstrate that this issue has broad support among wastewater utilities across the country.  The letter will be sent to all Members of Congress to alert them to our efforts and urge their support.
