In 2013, NACWA, the Water Environment Federation (WEF), and the Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF), released the Water Resources Utility of the Future… Blueprint for Action to capture the groundbreaking transformation happening at wastewater utilities as they progressed beyond simply complying with the Clean Water Act. Clean water agencies have been increasingly embracing and implementing innovative approaches and technologies related to energy production, water reuse, green infrastructure, non-traditional partnerships, and more, to improve environmental performance while lowering costs and increasing revenue and helping boost the local economy. This triple-bottom-line approach is at the heart of the Utility of the Future (UOTF) initiative and is rapidly spreading throughout utilities of all sizes across the nation.
In the two years since the launch of the Blueprint, there have been major developments in the UOTF landscape. To document these changes, NACWA, WEF, and WERF, newly joined by WaterReuse, released the first Water Resources Utility of the Future Annual Report in September 2015. The Annual Report marks the beginning of a continued effort to follow and update the clean water community on the exciting progress happening in the UOTF arena.
